There are two things which are currently having a major impact within the entertainment world – virtual reality and augmented reality. Both of these technologies were once seen as almost science fiction, but now they’re growing and are a reality. They are also accessible to almost everyone. Go on reading!

With new technology comes new opportunity and you can use both virtual reality and augmented reality within your sphere of business. Virtual reality, or VR, and augmented reality, or AR, are two very different and yet similar technologies. They can be used alone or together and both have a fascinating line of almost endless opportunities for their usage. They’re not just for video game purposes, although this is a good place to start.
allows the user to step inside a 360 degree virtual world, where everything is three dimensional. There are helmets which can be worn to achieve this. There are even devices now which make smartphones VR compatible. As well as computer games this technology can be used to look at VR recreations of real places which can give a valuable tourism or learning experience. There is also virtual reality which can be created by using photographs, although this kind of VR doesn’t allow for any form of user interaction.
is slightly different. This creates something else within a reality and overlays it, such as with the popular game Pokemon Go. This game showed you things that weren’t there in reality on your device and created a completely different gaming experience. AR doesn’t require any additional equipment such as helmets in order to work.
The best examples of both of these technologies might be from the world of gaming, but they have many practical uses in the real world too.
The AR technology is being developed to use with things such as workplace safety when using tools and even car safety. Driverless cards, which are still being developed, will rely heavily on AR to see what is there and predict and project instances and episodes which can occur on a road. AR can also inform you of maintenance tasks which need to be performed and in the event of this being in a difficult location, VR can be used to plan how it will be undertaken.
Communication is important within business. It’s not always possible to get everyone in the same place at the same time. Conference calls can be difficult to set up with multiple users, as can any kind of video conferencing. There are now VR chat rooms where each user can create an avatar. The group can meet in the same room whilst all being in different parts of the world.
Building and engineering can rely heavily on virtual reality and augmented reality. Gone are the days of simple drawings of plans and now 3D virtual versions of new buildings or bridges can be created for presentations of projects. AR can also be used in tandem with it for picking out potential safety issues on construction sites.
Virtual reality ‘games’ of a kind can be used for rehabilitation following illness or surgery. The patient plays the game and the VR and AR use the player’s actions to assess their health and recovery. 3D VR versions of internal organs and individual patients can be helpful during pre-op consultations too.
New doctors can be trained using virtual reality without having to operate on real patients before they have the knowledge, experience and confidence to do so. There are also benefits for those with mental health problems and the technology is being used to help them as well.
Entertainment and education are also fields within which both augmented reality and virtual reality have significant use. They can be used for teaching and to create art projects. Even training for new workers in many industries can be conducted with the help of VR.
Due to the huge strides which have been made within these technologies there are so many ways in which they can both be used. The potential of VR and AR is still just being tapped into and there aren’t many people who have jumped on board with them yet.
This depends on the kind of business you run, but as you’ve seen from the above examples, there are many ways. What your business does might not incorporate any of these particular tasks, but that’s not a problem. Think outside the box a little.
Something as simple as a 3D VR tour of your factory or warehouse could be presented on your website. Users will be able to view this by using a helmet or smartphone compatible device. The devices for smartphones are not particularly expensive and sales are on the up.
VR vs. AR
You could provide tutorials in a VR world for how your products are used. You could even create an AR Pokemon Go-style app which shows all of your locations. There really is no end to how you can use the technology.
The great thing about the use of augmented reality and virtual reality is that both are still in their relative infancies. This gives you the chance to be a real trailblazer. Being among the first companies to offer customers any kind of AR or VR experience is a sure fire way to get noticed and it could create quite a buzz about your company.
If you haven’t done so already, go and check out what virtual and augmented realities can do. Get yourself a helmet or download an AR app. That way you can see for yourself just what the potential capabilities are. And who knows? Maybe you’ll get some inspiration for how you can use either or both of these technologies yourself.
